The new Maserati MC20 supercar
The stunning new art from Modena, Italy
Maserati have been busy in the last few weeks, advertising the event to unveil their new two seater supercar. While there hasn't exactly been a shortage of new, modern supercars - this one is a little special. Maserati rarely release new sports cars and as we get closer to the age where no pure petrol cars are going to be made, each new supercar released is an interesting experience.
Maserati MC20
With this car, boasting just over of 620bhp from a new bi-turbo 3.0-litre V6 - the 'Nettuno Engine'. This forces the lightweight chassis to 62mph in just 2.9 seconds. The car will also eventually be available as a fully electric car.
This return to hardcore, racing edge Maseratis is what makes the MC20 so special. Maserati until now has offered a small range of vehicles that fitted the GT family car nicely, but if you wanted to fill the need for a true supercar, they weren't who you turned to.
With that, we mark the first issue. Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini.. all of them fall within the price bracket of the MC20. That's some tough competition for the brand to keep up with. Having said that, the MC20 seems like one of those cars that will do well. The first of its kind in a long time and a great looking automobile.
Depreciation
The good news for second-hand buyers is that Maserati aren't as fortunate as their neighbours at Ferrari when it comes to residual values and picking up a second hand MC20 in 3 years time should be comparable to the current McLarens. This assumes that Maserati make the same number of cars as predicted.
Conclusion
The Maserati MC20 is a great looking car, there were numerous comments on the engine sound, but until we all get a good test drive, that will remain a question of audio quality from a live event. As time progresses we'll be able to say if the MC20 will live up to the hype that the company has given it - but from the press conference today - the MC20 is looking like a fantastic entry to the supercar world for Maserati.
We're routing for you, Maserati!
